What is Burlesque?

Burlesque means something ridiculous and coarse, and it is a stage art from that combines humor, sensuality, breaking of norms, and body positivity. The genre is known for its spectacular costumes, playful characters, and ability to surprise audiences. In the U.S., burlesque also became the name of a sexually provocative revue genre that emerged around the 1850s, as a bold and cheeky counterpart to the more polished vaudeville and variety shows.

In modern times, perhaps the most famous burlesque dancer is Dita Von Teese, known for her lavish performances - such as when she dances inside a giant martini glass. In short, burlesque is a celebration of stage joy, freedom, and the body - where everything from sparkling feathers to cheeky humor has its place.
